Cause

Our first draw is to help Support Summerland Food Bank!

Our immediate challenge is operational. The costs of modifying space at the Alliance Church, the ever-increasing cost of food, the reduction in donations due to inflation, and the increasing number of families in need, has created a perfect storm. Our operational cash reserves are at their lowest point we have seen in many years, while our expenses are increasing out of proportion. This is unfortunately a current challenge for food banks across Canada. We must also meet the needs of our partnership with Turning Points Collaborative Society and our planned building project.

We run a seasonal program called Seed to Feed, which provides fresh vegetables and fruit to the Food Bank and to the Food Sharing Stand that is open to all Summerland residents. A recent agreement with Work BC will result in them joining 14 other agencies in Penticton that share our offices on a part-time basis to provide a wide variety of social and human services to those in need. We, our clients, and our agencies, benefit from the exchange of information that comes with the sharing of a facility. This a benefit to Summerland that is not available in larger centres where each agency operates from a different location. Sharing space contributes greatly to our mission statement “To provide a one-stop resource centre for people in need in Summerland”
